We hope you enjoy our interview my Ms. Bertha Tilkens. I felt honored to be sitting next to her and getting to ask questions about her life. At the end of the interview I mentioned I learned so much from Bertha and this is because both on and off the camera, every sing word she spoke was wisdom.

Chapter 2: Netche Gray

Also known as Ce Pvnkv Gray, and his wife, Bertha Gray. A wonderful video by Joe Sulphur. 

​Joe shared a story with us about Netche. 

One time, traveling down the highway, Netche pointed to a road near Okmulgee and said, Over there is where 'ste lvstvke first came up with women wearing cans." Said around 1930's he credits freedmen at their stomp ground with coming up with the use of cans instead of turtles. It didn't catch on at first, but like all ladies, they just had to have a pair of cans. However, during certain ceremonies, women wearing locv with get head of the line privilege. No one ever thinks about where the use of cans came from but that was his opinion.
